Yucca . The Spineless Yucca is the only recommended variety to keep in your home. Other outdoor, hardier types have leaves that are too sharp and pointed to be safe in the home. Available in many sizes, small table top plants through to large multi stemmed specimens. A mature Yucca is a bold and striking plant, very fitting with modern, minimalist homes. Yuccas are very easy to care for, they are one of the most tolerant plants in respect of changing conditions throughout the year. Originally a desert plant from Mexico means it needs infrequent watering, and copes with a wide range of temperatures.

Summer care: Yuccas will survive quite happily in low light, where they require less water, but to help it grow it needs bright or direct sunlight. Water thoroughly then allow the top of the soil to dry before watering again. This could be as often as once a week in the height of Summer, depending on location, but don`t be hasty if it takes longer, the only thing it doesn`t like is overwatering, it can`t cope with wet feet.

Survives fluctuating temperatures throughout the year so any basic room temperature is fine.

Fertilise occasionally with a half strength liquid feed. Once a month from March to October is more than adequate.

Basically it`s ok wherever you put it, just don`t overwater.

Winter care. As mentioned above your Yucca can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, 10c is ok, so it can be kept in a virtually unheated room. Reduce watering while not actively growing and don`t fertilise.

Yuccas are often called false palms as the lower leaves turn yellow and die off, this is how the trunk forms, and is natural.

Repot in Spring once every 2-3 years. Plant in a deep heavy container to prevent it toppling over.

Yuccas contain compounds which protect it from insect and fungal attack. While it can normally protect itself with its tough leaves and hard bark, persistent pets could damage the plant enough to come across these compounds. The bitter taste is meant to deter animals from eating any part, but if you find that your pet has been determined enough to eat the Yucca then it`s best to seek veterinary advice if they show symptoms of vomiting or diarrhoea.
