Product Overview

Tradescantia Nanouk – this beautiful cultivar was first developed in the Netherlands in 2012 through a selective breeding program focused on creating a more compact type of Tradescantia, with very bold colouration and easy care.

Tradescantia make beautiful trailing vines that are best shown off in a hang basket, a pot trailing from a raised position, or kept compact as a table plant. They are very versatile, very easy to care for, and come in many attractive colours. One of the easiest plants to propagate, their ability to root and thrive in a wide variety of conditions makes them a must have if you tend to neglect your plants. Also recognised as one of the best plants to have in your home to help filter toxins and purify the air.

Summer care: Tolerant of a wide range of temperatures, 12-24c, and light conditions, Tradescantia can be placed almost anywhere in the home. However to achieve the most vibrant colours then put your plant in bright, indirect light and keep it averagely warm, 18-22c. Too little light will cause the colours to fade.

With fleshy leaves and stems Tradescantia are able to store water in the event of periods of drought. Therefore water by the soak and dry method. Water the plant thoroughly, approx. once a week, but then make sure you allow the top half of the soil to become dry before watering again. Too much water leads to root rot.

When happy it`s a fast grower but can be kept to a desired size by easy pruning, simply cut the stems to encourage bushy growth, and use the cuttings to easily propagate new plants to share.

Fertilise moderately, once a month with a diluted half strength houseplant liquid feed as per instructions.

Minimum Temp: 15c

Repot in Spring once the roots have filled the current size pot. Use good quality, free draining soil, and a slightly larger pot. Do not over pot as this will allow for too much compost, and too much moisture around the roots.

Winter care: In Winter Tradescantia will adapt to cooler temperatures and reduced light levels. Growth stops so it requires less water and no fertiliser. Water moderately but make sure to wait until the top of the soil becomes dry, don`t be tempted to water again until this happens, even if it seems a long time since last watered.

Propagation: Propagation is as simple as cutting an inch or two of stem from your plant, with ideally 2 pairs of leaves above and simply potting in to fresh compost, water well and away you go. Remove any lower leaves if they touch the soil as they will potentially rot off and may cause the cutting to fail. If you are potting several stems or more in to the same pot, to produce a bushy multi stemmed plant, then pot them around the edge of the pot to avoid them touching, the compost is also slightly warmer at the edges so will help the roots to grow quicker.

Warnings:

Not listed as toxic to humans or pets if ingested, but the sap can cause irritation to sensitive skin. Make sure to wash your hands after contact.
