Product Overview
Schefflera, the Umbrella Tree, is another great addition to your home. Either green or variegated, both are easy care. Their attractive leaves have the added bonus of being listed as natural air fresheners and detoxifiers. Sold as smaller bush type plants or larger specimens, usually supported by canes or a moss pole.
Basic care will keep this plant healthy and thriving for many years. Best suited to a bright position, without direct sun. Green types tolerate lower light conditions, Variegated types aren`t so tolerant. It really only affects the growth and colour, rather than causing any harm. Too little light may cause leggy growth. Easily pruned to keep compact and bushy, or allowed to climb and become a taller specimen plant. Ideally suited to average room temperatures, 15-24c. If possible avoid sudden temperature drops or draughts. During growth in the Summer months they do like to be kept moist but not constantly wet, don`t let them sit in water. Water well and allow to drain freely. Fertilise with a liquid houseplant feed as per recommended dosage once a week from Spring to Autumn.
Minimum Temp: 15c
As with most other tropical plants Schefflera require a Winter rest period, where growth slows down. If room temperatures are lower than average then reduce the frequency of watering, allowing the top of the soil to become dry.
Re-potting is only necessary every 2-3 years once the roots have completely filled the pot. Re-pot in early Spring before the main growth cycle. Do not over pot, the new pot should be only slightly bigger than the old one. Use a good quality, free draining houseplant compost.
Warnings: The sap is considered mildly toxic. Keep away from children and pets.
