Ledebouria Socialis – Silver Squill or Leopard Lily.

A very interesting bulbous succulent plant native to South Africa. The dramatic, mottled foliage, and tiny, intricate flowers makes for a very attractive, and extraordinarily tolerant plant. It can survive serious neglect, going for months without water, but when cared for will reward you with a superb display of exotic foliage.

It`s commonly grown indoors, but is best treated to a long Summer holiday outside in the sun.

It`s far tougher than it looks and will survive minus temperatures as long as it is kept very dry.

Ideally planted in a wide, shallow bowl, giving the bulbs plenty of room to multiply.

So for something very tough, and very different add Silver Squill to your plant collection.

Secrets of success:

In the home:

Best kept in a bright spot, try to avoid extreme direct summer sun.

Not happy in the shade.

Water as with many succulents, water well then allow to dry thoroughly before watering again.

Happy in any temperature within the home.

May produce flowers in late Winter to early Spring (to achieve this it will require a period of dormancy, with dry conditions and cooler temperatures)

Aftercare:

In Winter allow the plant to rest and prepare for next years` growth and flowers. Water very little, and keep in a cool, bright spot, with temperatures ranging between 10-12c at night, and 16-18c during the day.

Remove any old, dying foliage to encourage better plant health.

Repot only when necessary, approx. every 3 years, using good quality, free draining Cacti & Succulent compost.

As mentioned above Silver Squill can potentially be planted out in a sheltered, sunny spot as long as it`s protected from excess moisture.

Warnings:

Considered toxic to pets and humans.

Best practice is to keep out of reach.
