Hedera Helix – Common English Ivy. One of the most recognised plants, this vigorous, self-clinging evergreen climber can be kept indoors in a bright cool position, or planted outdoors. It`s an ideal plant for an unheated room or conservatory, and will thrive elsewhere as long as temperatures are not too high. Commonly grown as a hang plant, it can also be trained to climb a mosspole or trellis. It`s also another plant regarded by NASA as one of the top 10 plants to help purify the air in your home.

There are many varieties commercially grown today with varying leaf sizes and colours, so you will find an ivy that is ideal for any location. They mainly range from green leaf types to variegated silver, white and gold. All Hedera prefer moderate light, with no direct sun, and green leaf types are more than happy in the shade.

During growth, from Spring to Autumn, water well then allow the top of the compost to become touch dry before watering again. Don`t keep the compost constantly soggy, this will lead to problems.

In Winter, when growth is slow, allow the compost to dry more thoroughly between watering. Keep away from any direct heat sources, such as radiators. Regular misting will help prevent the leaves from drying out and becoming brown and crispy. Alternatively you can stand your Ivy on a saucer of wet pebbles to help increase the humidity around the plant.

Hedera can be fast growing so repot in Spring approximately every 2 years. Remember to increase the pot size only slightly to avoid the chance of having too much compost around the roots that could become waterlogged.

Prune the Ivy to any desired length at any time of the year.

Fertilize once a month from Spring to Autumn with a high nitrogen based liquid feed.

Warnings: Problematic to pets and humans if consumed. Causes irritation and swelling in the mouth.
