Fatsia Japonica – Japanese Aralia or Castor Oil Plant. A native of Japan and South Korea, introduced to this country in the early 19th century. As a houseplant it is trouble free and tolerant of almost any conditions, but will also live happily outdoors in all but the worse weather that the UK can offer. With a little shelter it is remarkably unfussy. It copes with little or no direct light and makes an ideal plant for a near sunless spot in the garden. If bought as a houseplant it will need acclimatising to life outside, or just enjoy it in your home. In the home a great plant in either bright, indirect light or a shady corner, just avoid direct sun. Water regularly while growing through Spring and Summer. Water thoroughly then allow the top of the soil to become just dry before watering again. It thrives best at slightly lower temperatures in the home, and much prefers cooler nights. Daytime temperatures between 16-20c, with cooler nights down to 10c makes the leaves lusher and firmer. Too much constant heat produces weaker growth. Fertilise once every 2 weeks with a diluted half strength foliage liquid feed. In Winter reduce the frequency of watering, as growth is slow, and stop feeding. Remember to allow the top of the soil to become dry, don`t be too hasty as this will take longer.
