Cordyline Australis – The New Zealand Cabbage Palm or Torbay Palm.
An erect, palm like tree with narrow arching leaves which over time creates a stem, this gives it its palm like appearance, and common name.
Tall, usually single trunked, with occasional fragrant flowers, this is one of the easiest, and best plants for coastal positions, as it is both salt and wind tolerant.
A regular sight in the South West, Devon and Cornwall.
Perfect in the garden, or on the patio in pots.
Secrets of success:
Happy in full sun or partial shade.
Any soil apart from heavy, waterlogged.
Very drought tolerant once established.
Quite fast growing, so give it some space to grow.
Fully hardy down to approx. -8c
Once flowered the crown will often divide and develop multiple heads.
Minimum Temp: -8c
Aftercare:
Remove lower leaves once completely faded to improve the look of the plant.
