Syngonium – The Goosefoot or Arrowhead plant. Generally bought as a table top plant it`s actually a climbing vine. Sometimes overlooked as the leaf shape is similar to Pothos and Philodendron, these can make very nice, easy care plants. Traditionally grown varieties had variegated leaves, but new hybrids include a neon pink. The heart shaped leaves are attractive, and it`s another highly rated plant for cleaning toxins from the air in your home.
Another plant that much prefers good bright, indirect light with no direct sun.
During Spring and Summer when actively growing Syngonium can be quite thirsty plants. Try to avoid the little and often approach, but adopt the soak and dry method. Water thoroughly, but then allow the top 3rd of the compost to become dry before watering again.
Average room temperatures are ideal.
Not too fussy about extra humidity, although keeping together with other plants, or standing on a saucer of moist gravel can create a little extra if you find the tips of the leaves becoming brown and crispy.
Fertilise approximately once a month with a foliage plant liquid feed as per instructions.
Minimum Temp: 16c
As with most plants Syngonium will rest a little over Winter, but only for a short time and you may well notice a few new leaves appearing even in the colder months.
As with the Summer you can water your Syngonium quite thoroughly but the wait time that it takes to become dry enough to water again will be considerably longer. Don`t be too hasty.
Take care in Winter to avoid cold draughts or direct heat sources.
As mentioned at the beginning Syngonium are naturally climbing vines so if you want to let it do its own thing then you will need to give it some support to cling to. Alternatively prune out any of the longer shots to encourage a bushier appearance.
As with many plants the sap contains levels of calcium oxalate crystals, which deter livestock from eating them. Therefore problematic to pets and humans if consumed. Causes irritation and swelling in the mouth. Best practice is to keep out of reach.
