Helxine – Soleirolia Soleirolii – Baby`s Tears / Mind Your Own Business.
A fast growing evergreen creeper. Best grown covering the top of a wide shallow pot, it will trail slightly but the creeping stems need to have contact with the soil. Can be kept indoors, or planted out as long as you realise that it can be invasive in the garden, where it quickly forms a lush green carpet. It looks great between flagstones, and makes a great companion for ferns in a shady corner of the garden.
Likewise although it looks like an ideal plant for a moist terrarium, it will quickly outgrow other plants. But don`t be put off, you can`t walk past this plant without touching and fussing it. It`s a fascinating little plant that`s very easy care, and can be pruned to your hearts delight.
In the home Helxine is quite happy in shade to natural, indirect light. Must be kept out of direct Sun as the leaves will scorch and shrivel.
Keep the compost moist at all times, it really doesn`t like being allowed to dry out. It`s best to water regularly from below.
Happy in a wide range of temperatures, between 10-24c.
Thrives with extra humidity, so keep it placed on a saucer of moist gravel, and regular misting during the hotter days will also benefit the plant.
Fertilise twice a month through Spring and Summer with a diluted half strength liquid houseplant feed.
In the garden plant in semi-shade in a moist environment.
Helxine will get knocked back by frost but will easily survive and thrive again next season.
Easily propagated by division. Divide the plant in to smaller clumps by gently pulling apart, and repot in to good quality free draining compost.
