Product Overview

Introduction:

Sedum Makinoi Tornado – Japanese Stonecrop.

Sedum Makinoi is a hardy, creeping succulent, part of the stonecrop family, which thrive with the barest of care. Their common name ` Stonecrop` is jokingly so called as only stones need less care. Stonecrop thrive where most other plants will not survive, in the driest, hottest conditions, or alongside other plants in more favourable conditions.

They are so easy to grow, and will basically take root wherever the stem is touching the ground, or taller stems can be trimmed and pushed in to the ground, where it will root and form another plant.

Yellow star-shaped flowers are borne in mid-summer.

So as a garden plant, or an indestructible, and unusual houseplant, for that direct sunny spot, then the Sedum Makinoi Tornado is unbeatable.

Secrets of success:

In the home:

Summer care.

Keep in very bright light to full sun. Brighter the better will encourage growth.

Water as with many succulents with the ` soak and dry` method. Water thoroughly once the compost is completely dry, do not allow the plant to sit in water. Water again only when the compost is completely dry, the time will depend on light and temperature, just don`t be hasty, err on the side of caution as they are more than happy kept dry, but will not tolerate over watering.

Fertilising is generally not necessary.

Happy in any temperature.

Repot when necessary using a cacti & succulent compost, or a mix of houseplant compost and perlite.

If kept in a cool place through Winter then the plant will rest, reduce the amount and frequency of water to suit, again err on the side of caution, dry is best.

Minimum Temp: -10c

Aftercare:

In the garden stonecrop will flourish in a dry, sunny spot. Will survive in semi-shade although growth will be weak, with less colouration.

The creeping nature will eventually form a dense ground cover.

Traditional rockeries with good drainage is best.

Hardy in most conditions, as long as the soil is free draining, not heavy and wet.

Warnings:

Not known to be toxic.
