Product Overview

Rhipsalis – The Mistletoe Cacti. Rhipsalis are tropical spineless cacti native to Central and South America. They are naturally epiphytic, something that grows on another plant or organism sympathetically, not harming its host, and takes it water and nutrients from its surroundings. There are over 35 different species of Rhipsalis, so they can come in all different shapes and sizes. Another one of NASA`s highly recommended plants to help purify the air in your home.

As with most tropical jungle plants I like to be kept in bright indirect light, this mimics the sunlight filtering through the tree canopy above. A window allowing morning sun, and protection from midday sun, is ideal.

Rhipsalis are also very tolerant of low light positions, and have been known to survive long periods under artificial light. If kept in low light just be careful of how much water is given, as the plant will be less active and will require less water.

As a tropical cacti I am not as drought tolerant as desert cacti. I much prefer to be watered thoroughly, then allowed to dry between watering. On average approximately once a week, just make sure that the top half of the compost is dry between waterings. If possible use tepid water, rainwater is best or tap water than has been allowed to stand for 24 hrs.

Fertilise moderately through Spring and Summer with a diluted half strength liquid cacti feed.

Rhipsalis are happy in average room humidity, and temperatures between 16-28c

Minimum Temp: 15c

In Winter, when growth is slow, reduce watering and do not fertilise.

As an epiphytic plant, growing naturally in nooks and crannies on larger plants and trees, I am happy to be a little pot bound. Repot only when necessary using a good quality, free draining compost, and only a slightly larger pot. Approximately every 3 years is normally adequate.

Warnings: Not known to be toxic to pets and humans.
