Fatsia Japonica Variegata – Variegated Japanese Aralia or Castor Oil Plant. A native of Japan and South Korea, introduced to this country in the early 19th century. As a houseplant it is trouble free and tolerant of almost any conditions, but will also live happily outdoors in all but the worse weather that the UK can offer. With a little shelter it is remarkably unfussy. It copes with little or no direct light and makes an ideal plant for a near sunless spot in the garden. If bought as a houseplant it will need acclimatising to life outside, or just enjoy it in your home.

In the home:

A great plant in either bright, indirect light or a shady corner, just avoid direct sun.

Water regularly while growing through Spring and Summer. Water thoroughly then allow the top of the soil to become just dry before watering again.

It thrives best at slightly lower temperatures in the home, and much prefers cooler nights. Daytime temperatures between 16-20c, with cooler nights down to 10c makes the leaves lusher and firmer. Too much constant heat produces weaker growth.

Fertilise once every 2 weeks with a diluted half strength foliage liquid feed.

In Winter reduce the frequency of watering, as growth is slow, and stop feeding. Remember to allow the top of the soil to become dry, don`t be too hasty as this will take longer.

The lower leaves of the plant will eventually yellow and die off, this is natural.

Reacts well to regular pruning to keep it at a manageable size. Cut stems back in early Spring to encourage bushy new growth.

Repot in Spring when necessary, once the plant has become too pot bound. Use a large heavy pot if possible to help stop it toppling over, they can become quite large and top heavy, and use good quality free draining compost.

Move your Fatsia in its pot outdoors through Spring and Summer if you want. Just be sure to keep it in a shaded spot and bring it back in before the first threat of frost.

Plants that were bought already hardened off from the outdoor / garden department can be planted in a sheltered, shady spot. Avoid strong winds as the large evergreen leaves catch the wind and become damaged. Make sure to avoid direct sun. Generally Fatsias planted out require little attention, for younger plants water if conditions are particularly dry. A twice yearly feed with blood, fish and bone in Spring and Autumn will help the plant establish a healthy root system. Remove the faded yellow leaves from the base of the plant.

Fatsia react well to pruning, so trim and shape to the desired size.

Mature outdoor plants will normally flower in Autumn. The flowers are creamy white, borne on arching stems and are highly attractive to Bees and other pollinators. Small black fruits will follow to provide a great food source for birds in Autumn.

Not known to be toxic.
