Clusia Rosea – The Autograph Tree.

Native to South America and the Caribbean, Clusia are vigorous, tough plants with thick leaves that you can literally carve your name in to without harming the plant, hence its nickname of Autograph Plant, although this is not recommended to promote a healthy plant.

Clusia may occasionally flower, if treated to a particularly long, hot Summer, but is predominantly kept for its foliage and ease of care.

Its modern look goes well with clean lines and contemporary décor.

In its native environment Clusia can be considered invasive, forming trees with spreading branches, however kept in cooler climates in the home this isn`t a problem.

So if you`re looking for a stylish, easy care plant to add to your collection Clusia is a great choice.

Secrets of success:

As a tropical plant Clusia loves bright light and warm temperatures.

Keep in bright light, to full sun.

Daytime temperatures between 16-29c, and cooler nights down to 10c are ideal.

Clusia are fairly drought tolerant, and will survive some neglect, however best practice is to water regularly during the growing season, just allow the top 1-2cms of compost to dry slightly between watering.

Fast growing, Clusia can be fed once or twice a month with a balanced houseplant liquid feed as per instructions.

Minimum Temp: 10c

Aftercare:

In Winter, when days are shorter, and temperatures naturally cooler the plant will require less frequent watering, 2 or 3 times a month should suffice.

Keep in as bright a position as possible, but avoid hot or cold draughts.

Clusia appreciate extra humidity during times when the air in your home can be particularly dry, as in Winter when your central heating is on. Grouping together with other plants, occasional misting, or standing on a bed of moist gravel, or LECA ( clay balls ) will help to increase the moisture in the air around the plant.

As a fast growing plant Clusia generally need repotting every couple of years, using a slightly larger pot and good quality, free draining compost, which can include additional bark chips, or similar substrate to aid water retention, but aeration.

Clusia contain a sap that can irritate skin, so it`s advisable to wear gloves when handling.

Warnings:

Listed as toxic.

Keep out of reach of pets and children.
