Product Overview

Metasequoia – The Dawn Redwood.

The Dawn Redwood comes from China, and is a deciduous tree once thought to be extinct but rediscovered in Sichuan Province in the 1940`s. A relative of the Californian Coast Redwood, which are the tallest trees on the planet.

They make ideal larger bonsai as they are:

Fast growing, making them able to be formed in to your desired shape faster than any other bonsai.

The branches remain very flexible for a long time, making them easy to shape.

Completely hardy.

React well to pruning, forming new buds and branches so suitable for bonsai beginners.

Secrets of success:

Summer care.

Redwoods must be kept outdoors all year round.

Keep them in full sun, although during the hottest times of the year just be mindful of how quickly they can dry out, you may find that you need to water the tree twice a day.

Water thoroughly when the top of the compost is touch dry.

Winter care.

Although a fully hardy species of tree when grown in the ground, plants in pots can be affected by severe frost at the roots. If possible move to a sheltered spot during extremely cold spells.

Do not dry out.

Aftercare:

Fertilise sparingly in Spring, too much will provoke uncontrollable growth.

Re-pot in early Spring once the rapidly growing root system has filled the current container. A thorough root prune will be necessary each time to allow for the tree to be re-potted in to a slightly larger container, and to give enough room for the roots to grow for another year before it`s necessary again.

The best time to wire and shape the tree is late in the year, once the leaves have dropped. The wire can then remain on the tree until the next Summer, just check regularly to make sure that the wire hasn`t become restrictive to growth, or has started to cut in.
