Aphelandra Squarrosa – The Zebra Plant
Mainly found in subtropical South America, Aphelandra are upright shrubs that bloom profusely in the moist, tropical heat. The vivid yellow flower, which is actually a colourful bract, and strongly patterned dark green and white veined leaves are the stand out feature of this plant. Not a difficult plant to keep, and not often available, so add it to your collection when you can.
As with most tropical plants Aphelandra like bright, indirect light. It will tolerate some shade but growth will be slow.
Must avoid direct sun.
Water thoroughly in warmer months, then allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between watering, do not keep constantly wet. If possible use rainwater.
Average to warm room temperatures between 18-24c are best.
Cold draughts and soggy soil are two things they don`t like.
Fertilise regularly through Spring and Summer , once every 2-3 weeks, with a half strength balanced liquid feed.
Aphelandra love humidity so grouping together with other plants, keeping on a bed of moist gravel, and occasional misting will help increase the moisture in the air around the plant.
Minimum Temp: 15c
In Winter, when temperatures are lower, and growth is slow, reduce the amount and frequency of water, making sure to allow the soil to dry slightly. This will take longer, so don`t be hasty.
