Aglaonema – Chinese Evergreens. A group of plants with highly attractive foliage. Now available in shades of silver, green, lime, pinks and reds, they really stand out from the crowd. Native to Tropical regions of Asia, Aglaonemas are highly suited to the average home. Tolerant of low light and occasional neglect Chinese Evergreens are a must have plant for either a novice or green fingered collector.

Also recognised as one of NASA`s top ten plants to purify the air in your home.

As a rule of thumb, the darker green the leaf the less light it requires. Dark green will survive quite happily in the shade, while variegated types prefer natural to bright light, neither tolerates direct sun, the beautifully patterned leaves will definitely scorch.

Aglaonema naturally thrive in warm, humid conditions so during warmer months they must be kept moist, but not wet or sitting in water. It`s easier to water thoroughly then allow the top inch of the soil to become dry before watering again. To help humidity place the pot on a saucer of gravel to which you add water. Stand the plant on the gravel, without the roots touching the water, this will increase the moisture in the air around the plant. Misting the leaves also mimics its natural habitat.

Healthy plants and vigorous growth will result from all year round temperatures between 18-24c, so if your comfortable your plant will be to. Keep away from hot or cold draughts.

Fertilise sparingly once a month in Spring and Summer with a diluted half strength foliage houseplant feed.

If your home is cooler during the Winter, say between 16-18c, then your plant will adapt. Growth is slow so it requires less water and no fertiliser. Water thoroughly but make sure you wait until the top half of the soil becomes dry before watering again, don`t be tempted to water again until this happens, even if it seems a long time. Too much water will lead to the stems becoming soft and diseased.

Keep away from hot or cold draughts.

Aglaonema are fairly slow growing so only need repotting once every 2-3 years in early Spring. Use a slightly larger pot and good quality, free draining houseplant compost.

The plant sap contains irritating compounds that are present to deter animals from eating. Problematic to children and pets if consumed. Causes irritation and swelling in the mouth. Best practice is to keep out of reach of children and pets.
