Peperomia Argyreia – The Watermelon Peperomia.
Obviously named as the thick, shiny, oval-shaped leaves are strongly patterned like a watermelon. These peltate leaves, the stems attached centrally, are able to store water through times of drought, which makes them a good choice if you tend to forget to water your plants sometimes.
Native to South America, they remain fairly compact, and look great grouped together with other interestingly patterned companions.
With a few basic requirements, regards light and temperature, then this Peperomia makes a great addition to your plant collection.
Peperomia Argyreia naturally grow at low levels in tropical forests. Therefore they only receive dappled light from above. So a slightly shaded area of a naturally bright room is ideal, well away from any strong direct sunlight.
In Spring and Summer water well, preferably from below, then allow to dry quite thoroughly before watering again. Just make sure that you don`t keep constantly wet, as this will lead to root rot and fungal attack. You will get used to the appearance of the plant when it requires watering, as it will start to wilt if kept too dry.
Average to warm room temperatures, between 18-24c is fine. Don`t allow prolonged periods below 12c.
General humidity is fine, an occasional mist and clean of the leaves will keep the plant happy and healthy.
Fertilise moderately, once a month, through Spring and Summer, with a diluted half strength liquid houseplant feed.
Minimum Temp: 12c
In Winter, when growth is slow, times between watering will be longer, so don`t be hasty, it`s much better to keep on the dry side.
Peperomia are best kept slightly pot bound, to reduce the risk of having too much compost, and too much moisture around their roots. Re-pot in Spring approx. every 3 years, using a good quality free draining houseplant compost and only a slightly larger pot.
