Ficus Benjamina, The Weeping Fig. Recognised as one of the most tree like plants suitable for the home. Small bushes to majestic trees, with green or variegated leaves in several shapes and widths, that make a very impressive specimen if given the right conditions and care. Not a difficult plant to keep as long as you follow some basic rules. In recent years growers have found some imaginative ways to manipulate their pliable trunks to braid or twist the plants in to various forms.

Secrets of success:

Native to humid tropical rainforests the ficus benjamina needs warmth and humidity. Variegated leaf types tolerate medium to bright light, while green leaf types require slightly less indirect light. The plants tendency to drop some leaves is usually down to low temperatures, hot or cold draughts, or moving the plant from a place that it`s happy. Once you have found a suitable place in the home where your ficus receives enough light, constant temperatures above 16c, and enough room to grow then you shouldn`t have too many problems. If you experience leaf drop then try to remedy any of the above dislikes. Once this is achieved your ficus should settle down and replace the lost leaves.

Watering is best achieved in Summer by the soak and dry method. Water the ficus thoroughly, until water runs from the bottom of the pot, then allow the top 2-3cm of the soil to become dry before watering again. Don`t allow the plant to stand in water for a prolonged time. Average and above room temperatures are ideal to promote growth. Fertilise with a half strength foliage liquid feed every 2 weeks from April to September.

To help humidity stand the ficus on a saucer of decorative stones and fill with water below the level of the stones, so as not to allow the pot to sit in water. This will increase the moisture in the air around the plant.

In Winter the Ficus will adapt to cooler temperatures and reduced light levels. Growth stops so it requires less water and little fertiliser. Keep above 16c and make sure to keep away from cold draughts.

Minimum Temp: 16c

Aftercare:

Prune if necessary to limit the size of your ficus, ficus react well to pruning and this will promote a bushy habit. Be careful and wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the milky sap which can cause irritation.

Repot in early Spring, February – March, only once the ficus becomes too pot bound, as this can also bring on leaf loss. Use a slightly larger pot and use good quality, free draining compost. Water moderately and allow the plant to adjust.

Warnings: Problematic to pets and children if consumed. Please make sure that your plant is placed where neither can reach the sappy leaves or stems.
